I returned to teaching about 7 years ago after a 12 year absence. Reading this book is the best PD I have done in that time.

Whether you’re a new entrant to the profession or an experienced teacher, 6 Bridges to Effective Teaching is recommended. It makes for excellent reading.

When I was asked if I would read 6 Bridges, I was excited from the outset, but a little hesitant also. It has always seemed to me that this is an area of teacher education and teacher continuous learning that has been sadly lacking. I am delighted to say that 6 Bridges did not disappoint me.

6 Bridges spoke to me in a way that not many other similar texts have, as it’s real; it’s pertinent to all of us as teachers and learners, and importantly it’s written in a way that is inclusive of teachers, rather than excluding them with academic speak. I felt myself reading the book, thinking, “yes, that is so true,” and ‘…if only someone had offered this to me at some point in my career”. Most importantly though, I found myself being affirmed and encouraged to continue doing the job that I love so much!

My teaching experience has been both in Australia and the UK and in several school leadership roles and I believe that 6 Bridges is relevant and in fact, necessary, for all teachers to engage with at some stage. I now find myself working with many beginning teachers and I will certainly be recommending 6 Bridges to them. I will also be recommending this to schools with which I work, pre-service institutions and any teacher with whom I find myself chatting about what in fact it means to be a teacher.

I loved 6 Bridges and I wish Geoff and Anthony and their team every success.

6 Bridges is proving to be an invaluable resource to our supply teachers.  It provides them with the tools to work in any unfamiliar classroom with success.

This book really spoke to me, I frequently heard myself saying out loud, “Yes, yes! That’s exactly what it’s like.”  When I finished this very easy read I immediately rang colleagues and recommended they buy a copy.

I have read many teacher reference books, but I have yet to find a book that so accurately and honestly addresses contemporary classrooms from both perspectives - the teacher and the student.  6 Bridges not only depicts the stresses attached to today’s teaching role but the classroom management strategies it provides are both simple and logical.

I was especially impressed that 6 Bridges provides a voice for students to tell their story, highlighting the difficulties students face in our classrooms, encouraging us to question our attitudes and perhaps challenge some of our beliefs about our students.  However parents could also gain greater understanding of their children as students particularly those students well versed in their rights, less so in their responsibilities.

Whether a pre-service teacher, graduate teacher, classroom or casual relief teacher, this book is a must have.  I highly recommend 6 Bridges to be included as a teacher reference for university libraries.

All teachers regardless of experience will benefit from this insightful and honest account of classroom management issues facing educators today.  '6 Bridges' is filled with practical suggestions, inspiration and often humorous anecdotes which make an often daunting subject enjoyable reading. I only wish I had read this book when I was teaching.
